Ten years with VS Code

A documentary about VS Code is out: The Story of VS Code. I recommend watching it. It's lovely to meet the people behind a tool like this, learn its history, and discover its close connection with TypeScript. 🤝

I've been using VS Code since almost its very first release. Over that time, it has become such a familiar part of my work that it's easy to stop noticing the tool itself and the people building it behind that window full of code.

At one point, I even wrote a small extension for it: Bundlephobia Support. That experience gave me a particular appreciation for the editor's architecture.

When you want to extend its functionality, it's fairly easy as a developer to figure out what to do and how. The concepts behind VS Code's extensibility feel intuitive, and the types help you navigate the API. They almost tell you what is expected and how everything should fit together.

For me, this is one of those cases where both using a tool and trying to build something for it are enjoyable.

Thank you to the VS Code team for a wonderful editor. I've been using it for the past ten years. I've spent almost a third of my life looking at that window, and it has become more than just a tool to me. ❤️
